Project | 01 流动的羁绊(Flags)

Acrylic on canvas  2022

The state of flow represents communication, exchange, and intermingling. Both the natural world and human society are in a state of flow and exchange with each other. The world is not an island, the sea, the forest and the land are rich in colour. Similar cultures and traditions between countries are also related to the ancient practice of learning from each other and interacting with each other. From East Asia to South East Asia, 15 countries have different colours of sea, plants and land, but are connected to each other. Each country's flag is unique, but cultures have always influenced each other. It is not only the oceans that flow, but also the cultures. Flags don't change, but humans will always interact with each other. Colours flow, cover, change. Seemingly separate and unconnected, they influence each other without even realising it. Similarities and differences in cultures also have a variety of effects on the humans in them. The flow of colours brings a sense of abstraction to an image, stimulating the imagination, while always being in the middle of it, maintaining the ability to think without being influenced by others.

Project | 02 痕(Vague)
Chinese ink on the felt  2023

Vague explores the complexities of memory and the forgotten. This artistic endeavor aims to portray the retention and loss of memory through an abstract lens. Memory encompasses a multitude of past experiences. The more one perceives and absorbs, the richer the recollections of content, scenery, and events become. However, interwoven with these vivid recollections is a trove of forgotten content. The vague impressions of landscapes, the remnants left behind, the hazy contours and colors delineate what lingers in memory and what fades away.

Amidst these intertwined layers, the distinction blurs. Individual memories may not encapsulate collective experiences, yet I've come to realize that vague memories continue to invoke recollections of past encounters. Many of these remembered scenes have now blurred, yet they've granted me a clearer understanding of my cultural identity. My personal cultural identity not only shapes my self-perception but also deeply influences my sense of cultural belonging.

I've always maintained that irrespective  of my whereabouts, I mustn't forget my roots. Despite the blurred images within my memories, they retain specific elements, even if some are products of imagination or embellishment. These memories haven't entirely faded; they persist in some form or another.

Project | 03 Voices of Landscapes

Mixed media installation  2023

The artwork showcases pictures of landscapes in England recreated into idealized contemporary landscape painting. Borrowing the idea of historical Chinese landscape painting, it stems from suppression, privilege and an individualistic point for people in power. In contrast to its inaccessibility to the public in the past, the work is displayed on a pinboard intended for posting public messages or provide information.

The use of pinboards in the UK, Singapore and China differs in terms of the degree of freedom, raising the question of whether they are meant for the public.

With this juxtaposition, the work ventures into the absence of text, as an attempt to allude at the obscure element where traditional painting reflects the inner world of the artist, allowing viewers to interpret the imagery.

Project | 04 Devotion
Origami paper sculptures  2022

"Devotion" was inspired by the sincere devotion illustrated by Sister Elizabeth to helping people who are in need.

Origami is seen as a mundane form of art, the repetition of the folds and precision of the work must be done accurately and carefully, which also aligns with the sister’s of way of life: through the endless hard work, she contributed to the society in her own ways. The origami are arranged similarly to the form of stalagmites and stalactites crystals in a cave. Paper is a fragile material, however when made in large groups, it forms a strong foundation and even stronger sculptures.

This speaks of the sisterhood sister Elizabeth treasures during her service. Although she faced difficulties in her line of work, she instead chose to focus on memories that were more playful and lighthearted, and put a positive light on her experiences.

We realized that we did not necessarily have to seek out heavy topics and stories, instead, we could shine light on her admirable mindset to create a work that amplifies her character.
